    Description

LUCILLE NAMOKI (1917 - 2008) Hopi scalloped Plate.
    Plate measures 5 1/8 x 5 3/8"
This is a very old beautiful Hopi tray with scalloped edges. It is signed L. (Lucille) Namoki.  One of the finest intact design examples you could ask for on an old piece!  To paint narrow lines, Lucille used a tiny yucca stem dipped in paint made from wild spinach leaves Lucille was the wife of Watson Namoki, the sister-in-law of Bessie Namoki and Rosalie T. Kaye Namoki and the aunt of famed potter Lawrence Namoki. Her pottery is very traditional.  Lucille was Fire Clan from Kykotsmovi (Kykoramoci) village.
Hopi women have made pots, utensils, and ceremonial objects from clay gathered from the earth surrounding their villages since at least the 13th century.  Most of the ceramics they made were for domestic use - stew bowls, serving bowls, jars, and bottles.  Some pieces were made specifically for barter.  A potter might trade her wares for baskets or offer them in payment to the medicine man. Pieces might be offered as gifts.  These activities continue today. For example, Lucille Namoki made a set of bowls which were used to pay for her daughter's wedding clothes.
She is referenced in Schaaf's ''Hopi-Tewa Pottery 500 Biographies''.
