SPECTACULAR ZIA POLYCHROME “RAIN BIRD” PICTORIAL POTTERY STORAGE JAR, EXCELLENT!
This incredible and rare small storage jar is a wonderfully well proportioned form, similar to larger Jars at the turn of the 20th century.  It features a pair of the classic Zia bird designs and a flat bottom which is a distinguishing feature of a storage jar in comparison to the indented base found in ollas.  The rim is painted black and there is the typical pair of framing lines below the design area.
The fine geometric stepped and curvilinear patterns separating the birds may be stylized cloud formations indicating that this an extraordinary and seldom seen Zia Rain Bird pot.
“This very traditional Zia scene is on a creamy background and executed in exceptional fine craftsmanship.  The design was executed in dark brown paint outline and deep red paint.  The simplicity and uncluttered look of the design is the key to this striking piece.
- Realistic birds on Zia Pueblo pottery appeared around 1820 and their use has continued to today. They became much more in evidence by 1870.
The birds on this classic looking storage jar in miniature are typical of Zia birds of the 1st half of the 20th Century.
The birds each have a wing that point from the body like a leaf.  The birds have short legs, red bodies outlined, split tail feathers and black heads.  The pupil is a small dot in a round eye.” -
