    Description

Old Roman ring gem Intaglio 17th - 18th century AD antique
This is a wonderfully cut intaglio of a Roman empress, dating to the 17th - 18th century AD. It is made from natural carnelian gemstone
The empress is wearing a laurel wreath, she has some resemblance to empress Domitilla, or one of the early Julio-Claudian empresses. This intaglio would have originally been set into a gold signet ring or sold as an ancient original to some 18th century collector! This intaglio would benefit from being reset into a gold signet ring.
Intaglios were used as personal seals to authenticate documents and letters, acting as a signature today.
